All true religion rejects hatred, Pope repeats

Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) repeated his insistence that religion must never be used to incite hatred or violence, during a day-long trip to Naples to participate in the 21st International Meeting for Peace.

The Naples meeting, organized by the St. Egidio community, was the annual renewal of the inter-faith assembly for peace inaugurated by Pope John Paul II (bio - news), which first met in Assisi in October 1986. Although then-Cardinal Ratzinger had expressed reservations about the Assisi meeting, Pope Benedict welcomed the 2007 renewal. He told the different religious leaders gathered there that they represented "different Pope in his address, "in a certain sense expresses the different worlds and religious heritages of humanity, to which the Catholic Church looks with sincere respect and cordial attention."

The spirit of Assisi, the Pope continued, calls attention to "the intrinsic link uniting authentic religious attitudes with the fundamental good for humanity." All of the faithful, of any religious tradition, should pray for preservation from violence and particularly from terrorism, he said.

True faith of any sort, the Pope said, "is opposed to all forms of violence and to all abuses of religion as a pretext for violence." He added that "violence is justified in the name of God, it is important to reiterate that religions can never become vehicles of hatred, that never by invoking the name of God can evil and violence be justified."

The meeting in Naples drew leaders from the Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Shinto, and Zoroastrian traditions. Among the prominent participants were the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I; the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams; and the head of the World Council of Churches, Rev. Samuel Kobia.

Suspended priest threatens to expose Vatican homosexual network

Rome, Oct. 22, 2007 (CWNews.com) - An Italian priest who was suspended from his post in the Roman Curia last week has claimed that he has a list of active homosexuals working at the Vatican.

Msgr. Tommaso Stenico was removed from his duties at the Congregation for Clergy after the Italian La7 television network showed a videotape in which he propositioned a young man. Although the priest's face was obscured in the video, Vatican officials were able to identify his voice and his office, in which the video was surreptitiously recorded.

Msgr. Stenico did not deny that he was the priest caught on the videotape. He offered the claim that he was investigating the influence of a homosexual network around the Vatican.

Now, in a conversation with Italy's Panorama magazine, the disgraced cleric has pushed his claim further, saying that he has a "dossier" on the homosexual network and the priests involved. That information, he said, should make the Vatican "tremble."
