Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost Sunday
(Whitsunday)
J.M.J.

Rev. Fr. Leonard Goffine's
The Church's Year

INSTRUCTION ON THE FESTIVAL OF PENTECOST

What festival is this?

It is the day on which the Holy Ghost descended in the form of fiery tongues, upon the apostles and disciples, who with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, were assembled in prayer in a house at Jerusalem. (Acts II.)

Why is this day called Pentecost?

The word "Pentecost" is taken from the Greek, and signifies fifty. As St. Jerome explains it, this was the last of the fifty days, commencing with Easter, which the early Christians celebrated as days of rejoicing at the resurrection of the Lord.

Why is this day observed so solemnly?

Because on this day the Holy Ghost, having descended upon the apostles, the law of grace, of purification from sin, and the sanctification of mankind, was for the first time announced to the world; because on this day the apostles, being filled with the Holy Ghost, commenced the work of purifying and sanctifying mankind, by baptizing three thousand persons who were converted by the sermon of St. Peter; and because on this day the Church of Jesus became visible as a community to the world, and publicly professed her faith in her crucified Saviour.

Why did the Holy Ghost descend on the Jewish Pentecost?

Because on their Pentecost the Jews celebrated the anniversary of the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, and God would show by sending the Holy Ghost on this days that the Old Law had ceased and the New Law commenced. God also chose this time, that the Jews who on this day came together from all countries to Jerusalem to celebrate the Pentecost, might be witnesses of the miracle, and hear the New Law announced by the apostles.

Why is the baptismal font blessed on the vigil of Pentecost, as on Holy Saturday?

Because the Holy Ghost is the Author of all sanctity and the Fountain of baptismal grace, and because in the Acts (i. 5.) the descent of the Holy Ghost itself is called a baptism.

In the Introit of the Mass the Church rejoices at the descent of the Holy Ghost and sings:

INTROIT The Spirit of the Lord hath filled the whole earth, allel.; and that which containeth all things hath knowledge of the voice, Allel., allel., allel. (Wisd. I.7.) Let God arise, and his enemies be scattered: and let them that hate him, fly before his face. (Ps. 67.) Glory etc.

COLLECT God, who on this day didst instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit: grant us in the same spirit to relish what is right, and ever to rejoice in His consolation. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the same Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

LESSON (Acts II. I-II.) When the days of Pentecost were accomplished, they were all together in one place; and suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them:. and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak. Now there were. dwelling at Jerusalem, Jews, devout men, of every nation under heaven. And when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded in mind, because that every man heard them speak in his own tongue: and they were all amazed, and wondered, saying: Behold, are not all these that speak Galileans? And how have we heard every man our own tongue wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia, Phrygi!
a, and Pamphilia, Egypt, and the parts of Lybia about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews also and Proselytes, Cretes and Arabians: we have heard them speak in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.

Why did the Holy Ghost come upon the apostles in the form of fiery tongues?

The appearance of fiery tongues indicated the gift of language imparted to the apostles by the Holy Ghost, and inflamed their hearts and the hearts of the faithful with the love of God and their neighbor.

Why did a mighty wind accompany the descent?

To direct the attention of the people to the descent of the Holy Ghost, and to assemble them to hear the sermon of the Apostle Peter.

What special effects did the Holy Ghost produce in the apostles?

He freed them from all doubt and fear; gave them His light for the perfect knowledge of truth; inflamed their hearts with the most ardent love, and incited in them the fiery zeal for the propagation of the kingdom of God, strengthened them to bear all sufferings and persecutions, (Acts V. 41.) and gave them the gift of speaking in various languages, and of discerning spirits.

GOSPEL (John XIV. 23-31,) At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him. He that loveth me not, keepeth not my words: and the word which you have heard is not mine, but the Father's, who sent me. These things have I spoken to you, abiding with you: but the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, do I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid. You have heard that I said to you, I go away, and I come unto you. If you loved me, you would indeed be glad, because I go to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it came to pass, that when it shall come to pass you may believe. I will not now speak !
many things with you; for the prince of this world cometh, and in me he hath not anything. But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father hath givers me commandment, so do I.

Why is the Holy Ghost expressly called "Holy," since this attribute is due to each of the divine persons?

Because He is the Author of inward sanctity and of all supernatural gifts and graces, and therefore to Him is especially ascribed the work of man's sanctification.

What does the Holy Ghost effect in man?

He enlightens him that he may know the truths of religion and salvation, and the beauty of virtue; He moves him to desire, to aim after and to love these things; He renews his heart by cleansing it from sin, and imparts to him the supernatural gifts and graces by which he can become sanctified, and He brings forth in him wonderful fruits of holiness.

What are the gifts of the Holy Ghost?

According to the Prophet Isaias they are seven: 1.The gift of wisdom, which enables us to know God, to esteem spiritual more than temporal advantages, and to delight only in divine things. 2. The gift of understanding, by which we know and understand that which our faith proposes to our belief; children and adults should pray fervently for this gift, especially before sermons and instructions in the catechism. 3.The gift of counsel, which gives us the knowledge necessary to direct ourselves and others when in doubt, a gift particularly necessary for superiors, for those about choosing their state of life, and for married people who live unhappily, and do not know how to help themselves. 4. The gift of fortitude, which strengthens us to endure and courageously overcome all adversities and persecutions for virtue's sake. 5. The gift of knowledge, by which we know ourselves, our duties, and how to discharge them in a manner pleasing to God. 6. The gift of piety, which induces u!
s to have God in view in all our actions, and infuses love in our hearts for His service. 7. The gift of the fear of the Lord, by which we not only fear the just punishment, but even His displeasure at every sin, more than all other things in the world.

Which are the fruits of the Holy Ghost?

As St. Paul (Gal. V.. 22-23.) enumerates them, they are twelve: 1. Charity. 2. Joy. 3. Peace. 4. Patience. 5. Benignity. 6. Goodness. 7. Longanimity. 8. Mildness. 9. Faith. 10. Modesty. 11. Continency. 12. Chastity. To obtain these fruits as well as the gifts of the Holy Ghost, we should daily say the prayer: "Come, O Holy Ghost, etc."

Why does Christ say: The Father is greater than I?

Christ as God is in all things equal to His Father, but as Christ was at the same time Man, the Father was certainly greater than the Man-Christ.

Why does Christ say: I will not now speak many things with you?

Christ spoke these words a short time before His passion, and by them He wished to say that the time was near at hand when Satan, by his instruments, the wicked Jews, would put Him to death, not because Satan had this power over Him, but because He Himself wished to die in obedience to the will of His Father.

"More Brilliant than the Sun"

Sunday after the Ascension
J.M.J.

THE LADY "MORE BRILLIANT THAN THE SUN"
(excerpt from "Our Lady of Fatima's Peace Plan from Heaven")

On Sunday, May 13, 1917, slightly more than a year after the angel's first visit, the children were pasturing their flocks as usual. This time they were in a rather barren hollow, known as the Cova da Iria (Hollow of Irene), which was about a mile from their homes. It was noon of a clear, sunny day, when suddenly a flash of lightning cut the air - then another. Fearing a storm, the children quickly gathered the sheep to get them home. Then their glances fell upon a small holm-oak tree directly in their path. A dazzling light hovered over the topmost branches, when - wonder of wonders - what should they behold but the form of a lovely lady standing atop the tree in the light, her feet hidden in a shimmering cloud. She was like the angel, only far more beautiful. She wore a long white dress, and the mantle over her head and shoulders reaching to her feet was edged in burnished gold. Her hands were joined before her breast, and from the right hand hung an exquisite rosary !
of white pearls. As Lucy later described her, "She was a lady more brilliant than the sun."

After telling the children not to be frightened, the vision said; "I come from Heaven. I want you to come here at this same hour on the 13th day of each month until October. Then I will tell you who I am and what I want." She also told them to say the Rosary every day, and to bear all the sufferings God would send them.

In June the Lady appeared again. There were about 70 people present, though only the children could see the apparition. She told the youngsters that many souls go to Hell because they have no one to pray and make sacrifices for them. She said Francisco and Jacinta would soon leave the world for Heaven. Holding out her heart surrounded by thorns which pierced it from all sides, Our Lady told Lucy: "God wishes you to remain in the world for some time because He wants to use you to establish in the world the devotion to my Immaculate Heart. I promise salvation to those who embrace it, and their souls will be loved by God as flowers placed by myself to adorn His throne."

THE CHILDREN SEE HELL

During her appearance in July, Our Lady, in answer to Lucy's plea, promised that in October she would work a great public miracle so that all might believe and know who she was. Again the Mother of God told the children to sacrifice themselves for sinners and to say many times, especially when making a sacrifice, this prayer: "O my Jesus, I offer this for love of Thee, for the conversion of poor sinners, and in reparation for all the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary."

As she spoke these words, Our Lady stretched out her hands, and bright rays came forth which seemed to penetrate into the earth. All at once the ground vanished, and the children found themselves standing on the brink of a sea of fire. As they peered into this dreadful place, the terrified youngsters saw huge numbers of devils and damned souls. The devils resembled hideous black animals, each filling the air with despairing shrieks. The damned souls were in their human bodies and seemed to be brown in color, tumbling about constantly in the flames and screaming with terror. All were on fire within and without their bodies, and neither devils nor damned souls seemed able to control their movements. They were tossing about in the flames like fiery coals in a furnace. There was never an instant's peace of freedom from pain.

Looking with compassion at the pale and trembling little ones, the vision spoke to them: "You have seen Hell, where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world the devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If people do what I tell you, many souls will be saved and there will be peace."

THE VISION FORETELLS WORLD WAR II AND COMMUNISM

"The war [First World War, then raging] is going to end. But if people do not stop offending God, another and worse one will begin in the reign of Pius XI. When you shall see a night illuminated by an unknown light [January 25, 1938], know that this is the great sign that God gives you that He is going to punish the world for its many crimes by means of war, hunger, and persecution of the Church and the Holy Father.

"To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the Communion of Reparation on the five first Saturdays. If may requests are granted, Russia will be converted and there will be peace. If not, she will scatter her errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecution of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, and various nations will be destroyed . . .

". . . But in the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph, the Holy Father will consecrate Russian to me, Russia will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world." The Lady asked that this message be kept secret until she gave permission to reveal it.

Novena to the Holy Ghost

Ascension Thursday

J.M.J.

NOVENA to the HOLY GHOST

(Start on Friday, May 18th - nine days before Pentecost)

Foreword

The novena to the Holy Ghost is the oldest of all novenas since it was first
made at the direction of Our Lord when He sent His apostles back to
Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Ghost on the First Pentecost. It
is still the only novena officially prescribed by the Church. Addressed to
the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, it is a powerful plea for the
light, strength and love so sorely needed by every Christian. To encourage
devotion to the Holy Ghost, the Church has enriched this novena with the
following indulgences:

The faithful who devoutly
assist at the public novena in honor of the Holy Ghost immediately preceding
the feast of Pentecost may gain:

1. An indulgence of 10 years on any day of the novena

2. A Plenary indulgence, if they take part in at least five of the
exercises; and moreover go to confession, and receive Holy Communion and
pray for the Holy Father's intentions.

Those who make a private novena in honor of the Holy Ghost, either before
Pentecost or at any other time in the year may gain:

1. An indulgence of 7 years on any day of this novena

2. A Plenary indulgence under the usual conditions; but if a public novena
is held, this indulgence is available only to those who are lawfully
hindered from being part in the same.
[The above indulgences were granted prior to the 1968 Enchiridion of Indulgences]

First Day

Holy Spirit! Lord of Light!
From Thy clear celestial height.
Thy pure beaming radiance give!
The Holy Ghost

Only one thing is important - eternal salvation. Only one thing, therefore,
is to be feared - sin. Sin is the result of ignorance, weakness, and
indifference. The Holy Ghost is the Spirit of Light, of Strength, and of
Love. With His sevenfold gifts He enlightens the mind, strengthens the will,
and inflames the heart with love of God. To ensure our salvation we ought to
invoke the Divine Spirit daily, for "The Spirit helpeth our infirmity. We
know not what we should pray for as we ought. But the Spirit Himself asketh
for us."

Prayer

Almighty and eternal God, Who has vouchsafed to regenerate us by water and
the Holy Ghost, and hast given us forgiveness of all sins, vouchsafe to send
forth from heaven upon us Thy sevenfold Spirit, the Spirit of Wisdom and
Understanding, the Spirit of Counsel and Fortitude, the Spirit of Knowledge
and Piety, and fill us with the Spirit of Holy Fear. Amen.

Our Father
Hail Mary
Glory be to the Father (seven times)
Act of Consecration
Prayer for the Seven Gifts

Act of Consecration to the Holy Ghost

On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer
myself, soul and body, to Thee, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the
brightness of Thy purity, the unerring keenness of Thy justice, and the
might of Thy love. Thou art the Strength and Light of my soul. In Thee I
live and move and am. I desire never to grieve Thee by unfaithfulness to
grace, and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against
Thee. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch
for Thy light, and listen to Thy voice, and follow Thy gracious
inspirations. I cling to Thee and give myself to Thee and ask Thee, by Thy
compassion, to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of
Jesus, and looking at His five wounds, and trusting in His Precious Blood,
and adoring His opened side and stricken Heart, I implore Thee, Adorable
Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, so to keep me in Thy grace that I may never
sin against Thee. Give me grace, O Holy Ghost, Spirit of the Father and the
Son, to say to Thee always and everywhere, "Speak Lord, for Thy servant
heareth." Amen.

Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost

O Lord Jesus Christ Who, before ascending into heaven, didst promise to send
the Holy Ghost to finish Thy work in the souls of Thy Apostles and
Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me that He may perfect in
my soul the work of Thy grace and Thy love. Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom
that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after
the things that are eternal; the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my
mind with the light of Thy divine truth; the Spirit of Counsel that I may
ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven; the Spirit of
Fortitude that I may bear my cross with Thee and that I may overcome with
courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation; the Spirit of Knowledge
that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the
Saints; the Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and
amiable; the Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence
towards God and may dread in any way to displease Him. Mark me, dear Lord,
with the sign of Thy true disciples and animate me in all things with Thy
Spirit. Amen.

Second Day

Come, Thou Father of the poor!
Come, with treasures which endure!
Come, Thou Light of all that live!

The Gift of Fear
The gift of Fear fills us with a sovereign respect for God, and makes us
dread nothing so much as to offend Him by sin. It is a fear that arises, not
from the thought of hell, but from sentiments of reverence and filial
submission to our heavenly Father. It is the fear that is the beginning of
wisdom, detaching us from the worldly pleasures that could in any way
separate us from God. "They that fear the Lord will prepare their hearts,
and in His sight will sanctify their souls."

Prayer

Come, O blessed Spirit of Holy Fear, penetrate my inmost heart, that I may
set Thee, my Lord and God, before my face forever, help me to shun all
things that can offend Thee, and make me worthy to appear before the pure
eyes of Thy Divine Majesty in heaven, where Thou livest and reignest in the
unity of the ever Blessed Trinity, God, world without end. Amen.

Our Father
Hail Mary
Glory be to the Father (seven times)
Act of Consecration
Prayer for the Seven Gifts

Third Day

Thou, of all consolers best,
Visiting the troubled breast,
Dost refreshing peace bestow.

The Gift of Piety
The gift of Piety begets in our hearts a filial affection for God as our
most loving Father. It inspires us to love and respect for His sake persons
and things consecrated to Him, as well as those who are vested with His
authority, His Blessed Mother and the Saints, the Church and its visible
Head, our parents and superiors, our country and its rulers. He who is
filled with the gift of Piety finds the practice of his religion, not a
burdensome duty, but a delightful service. Where there is love, there is no
labor.

Prayer

Come, O Blessed Spirit of Piety, possess my heart. Enkindle therein such a
love for God, that I may find satisfaction only in His service, and for His
sake lovingly submit to all legitimate authority. Amen.

Our Father
Hail Mary
Glory be to the Father (seven times)
Act of Consecration
Prayer for the Seven Gifts

Fourth Day

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;
Pleasant coolness in the heat;
Solace in the midst of woe.

The Gift of Fortitude
By the gift of Fortitude the soul is strengthened against natural fear, and
supported to the end in the performance of duty. Fortitude imparts to the
will an impulse and energy which move it to undertake without hesitancy the
most arduous tasks, to face dangers, to trample under foot human respect,
and to endure without complaint the slow martyrdom of even lifelong
tribulation. "He that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved."

Prayer

Come, O Blessed Spirit of Fortitude uphold my soul in time of troubles and
adversity, sustain my efforts after holiness, strengthen my weakness, give
me courage against all the assaults of my enemies, that I may never be
overcome and separated from Thee, my God and greatest Good. Amen.

Our Father
Hail Mary
Glory be to the Father (seven times)
Act of Consecration
Prayer for the Seven Gifts

Fifth Day

Light immortal! Light Divine!
Visit Thou these hearts of Thine,
And our inmost being fill!

The Gift of Knowledge
The gift of Knowledge enables the soul to evaluate created things at their
true worth - in their relation to God. Knowledge unmasks the pretense of
creatures, reveals their emptiness, and points out their only true purpose
as instruments in the service of God. It shows us the loving care of God
even in adversity, and directs us to glorify Him in every circumstance of
life. Guided by its light, we put first things first, and prize the
friendship of God beyond all else. "Knowledge is a fountain of life to him
that possesseth it."

Prayer

Come, O Blessed Spirit of Knowledge, and grant that I may perceive the will
of the Father; show me the nothingness of earthly things, that I may realize
their vanity and use them only for Thy glory and my own salvation, looking
ever beyond them to Thee, and Thy eternal rewards. Amen.

Our Father
Hail Mary
Glory be to the Father (seven times)
Act of Consecration
Prayer for the Seven Gifts

Sixth Day

If Thou take Thy grace away,
Nothing pure in man will stay;
All his good is turned to ill.

The Gift of Understanding
Understanding, as a gift of the Holy Ghost, helps us to grasp the meaning of
the truths of our holy religion. By faith we know them, but by Understanding
we learn to appreciate and relish them. It enables us to penetrate the inner
meaning of revealed truths and through them to be quickened to newness of
life. Our faith ceases to be sterile and inactive, but inspires a mode of
life that bears eloquent testimony to the faith that is in us; we begin to
"walk worthy of God in all things pleasing, and increasing in the knowledge
of God."

Prayer

Come, O Spirit of Understanding, and enlighten our minds, that we may know
and believe all the mysteries of salvation; and may merit at last to see the
eternal light of Thy Light; and in the light of glory to have a clear vision
of Thee and the Father and the Son. Amen.

Our Father
Hail Mary
Glory be to the Father (seven times)
Act of Consecration
Prayer for the Seven Gifts

Seventh Day

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;
On our dryness pour Thy dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away!

The Gift of Counsel
The gift of Counsel endows the soul with supernatural prudence, enabling it
to judge promptly and rightly what must be done, especially in difficult
circumstances. Counsel applies the principles furnished by Knowledge and
Understanding to the innumerable concrete cases that confront us in the
course of our daily duty as parents, teachers, public servants, and
Christian citizens. Counsel is supernatural common sense, a priceless
treasure in the quest of salvation. "Above all things, pray to the Most
High, that He may direct thy way in truth."

Prayer

Come, O Spirit of Counsel, help and guide me in all my ways, that I may
always do Thy holy will. Incline my heart to that which is good; turn it
away from all that is evil, and direct me by the straight path of Thy
commandments to that goal of eternal life for which I long. Amen.

Our Father
Hail Mary
Glory be to the Father (seven times)
Act of Consecration
Prayer for the Seven Gifts

Eighth Day

Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray!

The Gift of Wisdom
Embodying all the other gifts, as charity embraces all the other virtues,
Wisdom is the most perfect of the gifts. Of Wisdom it is written "all good
things come to me with her, and innumerable riches through her hands." It is
the gift of Wisdom that strengthens our faith, fortifies hope, perfects
charity, and promotes the practice of virtue in the highest degree. Wisdom
enlightens the mind to discern and relish things divine, in the appreciation
of which earthly joys lose their savor, whilst the Cross of Christ yields a
divine sweetness according to the words of the Savior: "Take up thy cross
and follow me, for my yoke is sweet and my burden light."

Prayer

Come, O Spirit of Wisdom, and reveal to my soul the mysteries of heavenly
things, their exceeding greatness, power and beauty. Teach me to love them
above and beyond all the passing joys and satisfactions of earth. Help me to
attain them and possess them for ever. Amen.

Our Father
Hail Mary
Glory be to the Father (seven times)
Act of Consecration
Prayer for the Seven Gifts

Ninth Day

Thou, on those who evermore
Thee confess and Thee adore
In Thy sevenfold gifts, descend:
Give them comfort when they die;
Give the life with Thee on high;
Give them joys which never end. Amen.

The Fruits of the Holy Ghost
The gifts of the Holy Ghost perfect the supernatural virtues by enabling us
to practice them with greater docility to divine inspiration. As we grow in
the knowledge and love of God under the direction of the Holy Ghost, our
service becomes more sincere and generous, the practice of virtue becomes
more perfect. Such acts of virtue leave the heart filled with joy and
consolation and are known as Fruits of the Holy Ghost. These Fruits in turn
render the practice of virtue more attractive and become a powerful
incentive for still greater efforts in the service of God, to serve Whom is
to reign.

Prayer

Come, O Divine Spirit, fill my heart with Thy heavenly fruits, Thy charity,
joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, faith, mildness, and temperance,
that I may never weary on the service of God, but by continued faithful
submission to Thy inspiration may merit to be united eternally with Thee in
the love of the Father and the Son. Amen.

Our Father
Hail Mary
Glory be to the Father (seven times)
Act of Consecration
Prayer for the Seven Gifts

***********************************************************************************

Prayer to the Holy Ghost

Come, O Holy Ghost, fill the hearts of Thy faithful, and kindle in them the
fire of Thy love.

V. Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created;

R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray - Oh God, Who hast instructed the hearts of the faithful by the
light of the Holy Ghost, grant that by the same Spirit we may be always
truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolations. Through Christ Our Lord.
Amen. (From the Roman Missal).

*******************************************************************************

O Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, I adore You.
Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me.
Tell me what I should do, give me Your orders.
I promise to submit myself to all that You desire of me
and to accept all that You permit to happen to me.
Let me only know Your will. Amen

OUR LADY OF FATIMA
(an 8.5 x 14 folded brochure - 5 cents ea.)
Taken from http://olrl.org/prophecy/fatima.shtml

We celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13th. On this day in
1917, Our Lady made her first appearance to three shepherd children, Jacinta
(age 7), Francisco (age 9) and Lucia (age 10), at Fatima in Portugal. She
appeared to them once a month from May through October. The lives of the
three children of Fatima were entirely transformed by the heavenly
apparitions. While fulfilling the duties of their state with the greatest
fidelity, those children seemed now to live only for prayer and sacrifice,
which they offered in a spirit of reparation to obtain peace and the
conversion of sinners. They deprived themselves of water during the periods
of great heat; they gave their lunch to poor children; they wore around
their waists thick cords that even drew blood; they abstained from innocent
pleasures and urged one another to the practice of prayer and penance with
an ardor comparable to that of the great saints.

A SURE MEANS OF SALVATION

Our Lady communicated with Lucia, the oldest of the three children, in her
six monthly appearances. She asked the Blessed Virgin Mary to take them to
Heaven. "Yes," Our Lady answered, "I will take Jacinta and Francisco soon.
You, however, are to stay here a longer time. Jesus wants to use you to make
me known and loved. He wants to establish the devotion to my Immaculate
Heart in the world. I promise salvation to those who embrace it and their
souls will be loved by God as flowers placed by myself to adorn His throne".

There are three principal practices of devotion which Our Lady has requested
in honor of her Immaculate Heart: the First Saturday of the month, the Five
First Saturdays, and the Consecration of Russia. They bear a marked
similarity to the devotions in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The practice of the First Saturdays - It consists of the following
exercises, performed with the intention of consoling the Immaculate Heart of
Mary, and making reparation to it for all the outrages and blasphemies of
which it is the object on the part of ungrateful Christians: 1. the Rosary;
2. Communion of Reparation.

The practice of the Five First Saturdays - In addition to the two exercises
already mentioned, the following two are added on the first Saturday of five
consecutive months: 3. go to confession; 4. keep the company of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary by meditating for a quarter of an hour on the
mysteries of the Rosary. These two must be offered in reparation to the
Immaculate Heart . The meditation may be on one or several mysteries.

Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary - Our Lady asked that Russia be
consecrated to her Immaculate Heart and Lucia, one of the seers, has
explained that Our Lady wants the Pope and all the bishops of the world to
do this on one special day. If this is done She will convert Russia and
there will be peace . . .

The Consecration has not been done as Our Lady requested. After a lecture at
St. Peter's Church in New York City on January 27, 1988, the following
request was made of Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI: "Your
Eminence, I would like you to ask the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, to
consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, immediately and in union
with all the bishops in the world." He replied: "I know it has to be
done!"... This response is proof the Consecration has not been done.
Cardinals Stickler, Gagnon, and Mayer have also conceded that Our Lady of
Fatima's requested consecration of Russia has never been fulfilled. So we
must appeal to the Immaculate Heart of Mary to obtain for Our Holy Father
the Pope and the bishops of the world the graces to make this consecration
of Russia to her Immaculate Heart, just as she has requested, so that Russia
will be converted, so that we will have true peace in the world, and we will
have the Reign of Mary and the triumph of her Immaculate Heart.

Lucia relates that on June 13th, 1917, after speaking at length about her
Immaculate Heart, Our Lady of Fatima again stretched forth her hands,
throwing on the children the rays of that immense light in which they saw
themselves as if immersed in God . . . The Blessed Virgin held in her right
hand a Heart surrounded by thorns, which pierced it from all sides. The
seers understood that it was the Immaculate Heart of Mary, afflicted by all
the sins of the world, which demanded penance and reparation. "It seems to
me," said Lucia, "that on that day, the purpose of the light was to pour
into us a special knowledge and love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, as on
other occasions it infused into us the knowledge and love of God, and the
mystery of the Blessed Trinity."

Jacinta seems to have received "a special light to understand intimately and
in detail the meanings of these heavenly revelations." Before leaving for
the hospital in 1919, she said to Lucia: "I am going soon to heaven. You
will remain still on earth to make known to men that the Lord wishes to
spread in the world devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. When you have
to speak about it, you will no longer have to hide yourself! Proclaim openly
to the whole world that: It is through the Immaculate Heart of Mary that God
wishes to grant us His graces! It is from this Immaculate Heart that we must
ask for them! The Heart of Jesus wishes the Immaculate Heart of Mary to be
venerated with His own! It is through the Immaculate Heart of Mary that
peace must be asked, because it is to that Heart that the Lord has confided
it. How I love the Immaculate Heart of Mary! It is the Heart of Our Heavenly
Mother! Oh! If only I could put into all hearts the fire I feel in my own,
which makes me love the Hearts of Jesus and Mary so much!"

To remind the three children of their special vocation and to inspire them
to greater fervor and courage for the future, Our Lady said: "Sacrifice
yourself for sinners and say often, especially when you make some sacrifice,
'My Jesus, it is for the love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners, and in
reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.' "

In each of the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima, she insisted on praying
the Rosary. "Pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world." Lucia
often repeated and emphasized what Our Lady had first recommended to her:
"Yes, she wishes people to recite the Rosary; people must recite the
Rosary." Our Lady asked them to add after each decade the short prayer: "Oh
my Jesus forgive us our sins; save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls
to heaven especially those most in need of Thy mercy." In the final
apparition on October 13, 1917, Our Lady silently held out the scapular (the
brown scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel). Lucia had said that the Blessed
Mother wants everyone to wear it: "The Scapular and the Rosary are
inseparable."

Lucia spoke to Our Lady of the sick who had been recommended to her. "Yes, I
shall cure some of them within the year." But she went on teaching them to
pray rather for the health of souls than of bodies. "Pray! Pray a great deal
and make sacrifices for sinners, for many souls go to Hell for not having
someone to pray and make sacrifices for them."

Lucia asked Our Lady about two girls who used to come to her house that had
recently died. "Is little Maria Das Neves, who died recently, in Heaven?"
"Yes, she is in Heaven." . . . "and Amelia?" "She will be in Purgatory till
the end of the world."

Our Lady predicted that God would work a great miracle on October 13, 1917
to prove the authenticity of the apparitions. A tremendous prodigy happened
on that day just as Our Lady had promised. For four minutes, the noontime
sun spun around giving off various colors, one after the other. If a person
at Fatima that day had on a white shirt -- it would turn red, green and blue
as the sun spun around. It stopped and started again for four more minutes,
this time giving off even more beautiful colors. Then it stopped again. Then
it started again. This time it detached itself from its regular position and
began to zigzag in the sky. It "danced" for about four minutes, then started
to plummet to the earth. It looked like it was the end of the world. Many
people fell on their knees to ask for mercy of God. The sun then returned to
its original position in the sky. It was witnessed by over 70,000 people who
all, both believers and unbelievers, came away acknowledging that a great
miracle had occurred. Several learned men present testified: "I have seen it
but I cannot explain it."

BLESSED FRANCISCO'S DEATH

Francisco was struck down by the well-known Spanish influenza in December,
1918. The little patient suffered for several months always devout, and
faithful to his Rosary which he recited eight or nine times a day. When he
no longer had the strength to pronounce the words he said them mentally. He
was extremely ill and some of the medicines he had to take were not
particularly agreeable. "Yet he would take any medicine we gave him," his
mother said. "He never fussed. I could never find out what he liked. If I
gave him a glass of milk, he took it; and when I gave him an egg, he sucked
it. Poor child! He took any bitter medicine without making a face. This gave
us hope that he would recover, but he always repeated that it was useless
since Our Lady was going to come for him. He knew well what was in store for
him." On Thursday, April 3rd 1919, he made his First Communion on his
death-bed, all radiant with happiness. On the following day , Friday, April
4th, at 10 o'clock in the evening, he died the death of the elect, with a
smile on his lips. He was ten years and nine months old.

Jacinta was attacked by the Spanish plague almost at the same time as her
brother Francisco. She too spoke of nothing else than of reciting the Rosary
and offering sacrifices for sinners. Towards the end of January, 1920,
Jacinta was taken to Lisbon to be operated upon for a persistent lung
infection. There she immediately impressed all by her candor, her modesty,
her great patience, her perfect submission, her continued prayer and ardent
love for Holy Communion which she received every day except when prevented
by illness. Many doctors came to examine Jacinta; their only thought was of
science and medicine. They discounted the influence God might have on the
condition of the patient. The little girl did not hesitate to set them
straight on the matter, pointing out the cause of their frequent failures.
"Pity doctors. They have no idea what awaits them. Doctors do not know how
to treat patients with success because they have no love for God."

The Blessed Virgin continued to encourage this heroic virtue by her
apparitions. One day, when Mother Godinho, Superior of the orphanage, came
to see her, Jacinta asked her quite naturally: "Could you come back a little
later? I am expecting the Blessed Virgin any minute!" The effects of these
visits from heaven manifested themselves not only in the supernatural wisdom
of the child's words, but also in her predictions. Mother Godinho one day
asked Senhora Olimpia, Jacinta's mother, during a visit to the Orphanage:
"Would you like your daughters Florinda and Teresa to enter the religious
life?" "Heavens no!" that honest and uncomplicated woman exclaimed, and the
discussion seemed at an end. A little while later, however, Jacinta, who had
heard none of the conversation between the women, confided to Mother Godinho
with great seriousness: "Our Lady would like my sisters to be nuns, although
my mother would not approve. That is why she will take them both to heaven
before very long." If this was an "irresponsible" attempt at prophecy it
proved amazingly accurate, since shortly after Jacinta's own death her
sisters, Florinda, seventeen, and Teresa, one year younger, followed her to
the grave.

One of the doctors who attended her in Lisbon asked her to recommend him to
the Blessed Virgin when she went to heaven. Jacinta promised to do so; and
then looking at the doctor she said to him: "You will follow me soon!" To
another doctor, who recommended himself and his daughter to her prayers, she
promised to pray for them and added: "You will follow me soon; first your
daughter and then yourself!" These predictions, as well as several others,
were fulfilled to the letter.

What ardor did not this child of ten preach amendment of life, not only to
sinners, but also to faithful souls! How she insisted on flight from sin,
the practice of the Christian virtues and penance! "Oh!" she said to the
Superioress of the Orphanage in Lisbon, "if men only knew what eternity is,
how they would make all possible efforts to amend their lives! Dear
Godmother (she addressed the Superioress in this way), mortification and
sacrifice give great pleasure to Our Divine Lord! Oh! Fly luxury! Fly
riches! Love holy poverty and silence. Be very charitable even towards the
wicked! Never speak evil of anyone and avoid those who do. Be very patient
because patience leads to heaven. Pray much for sinners! Pray much for
priests, for Religious, for Governments! The sins of the world are too
great! The sins which lead most souls to hell are sins of the flesh! Certain
fashions are going to be introduced which will offend Our Lord very much.
Those who serve God should not follow these fashions. The Church has no
fashions; Our Lord is always the same. Many marriages are not good; they do
not please Our Lord and are not of God. . . . Oh! Men must do penance! If
they amend their lives Our Lord will still pardon the world; but if they do
not, the chastisement will come! Priests should occupy themselves only with
the affairs of the Church! They must be pure, very pure." Mother Godinho
asked her: "Do you know what it means to be pure?" "Yes, Yes. I know to be
pure in body means to be chaste, to be pure in mind means not to commit
sins; not to look at what one should not see, not to steal or lie, and
always to speak the truth, even if it is hard. The disobedience of priests
and of religious to their Superiors and to the Holy Father offends Our Lord
very much! If Government left the Church in peace and liberty to our holy
religion, they would be blessed by God. Our Lady said that there are many
wars and discords in the world. Wars are only punishments for the sins of
the world. She stated that she could not stay the arm of her Beloved Son
upon the world anymore. It is necessary to do penance. If people amend
themselves, Our Lord shall still come to the aid of the world. If they do
not amend themselves, punishment shall come."

When Jacinta was at the orphanage in Lisbon, before she was sent to the
hospital, she spent every possible moment in the chapel kneeling with her
eyes riveted on the tabernacle. Seeing people in church being irreverent
toward the Blessed Sacrament upset her greatly. She stated that Our Lady
does not want us to talk in church. One day she heard visitors discussing
faults of a certain priest who had been forbidden to say Mass. Jacinta began
to weep for sorrow and she said people should not talk about priests but
they should rather pray for them.

BLESSED JACINTA'S DEATH

February 20th came. Jacinta seemed about the same; she might last a few more
days, she might go any moment. About six o'clock in the evening the child
said she was not feeling well and she wanted to receive the last rites of
the Church. A priest was called, heard her confession and promised to bring
her Communion in the morning. Jacinta asked him to bring it immediately but
he could see no reason for alarm. She insisted that she was to die shortly.
At ten-thirty, she died peacefully without having her wish fulfilled. She
had just turned ten years old. The news of the child's death spread fast
through the city and crowds flocked to the church to see the body.

The undertaker testified that he never before nor after had a case like
Jacinta's. "It seems to me that I can still today see the little angel. Laid
in the casket she seemed to be still alive, in her full beauty with rosy
cheeks and lips. I have seen many bodies in my business, young and old.
Never did a thing of this sort happen to me before nor since." The pleasant
aroma that exhaled from her body cannot be explained. The worst unbeliever
could not question it . . . Though the child had been dead three days, the
aroma was like a bouquet of flowers.

Fifteen years after Jacinta's death, her body was transferred to the
cemetery of Fatima. When her casket was opened on this occasion her little
body was still whole and incorrupt.

It is hoped that everyone who reads this article will become most serious
about their salvation by practicing the prayers, devotions and penitential
life as prescribed by Our Lady and Blessed Jacinta.

Apparition of St. Michael the Archangel

J.M.J.

APPARITION OF ST. MICHAEL (May 8)
From the booklet "St. Michael the Archangel"

The history of the feast of the Apparition of St. Michael is very remarkable. In the year 492, a wealthy man had a large herd of cattle grazing on Monte Gargano in Italy, not far from the once famous city of Siponto. One day a steer went astray from the herd and did not return with the rest of the cattle at the usual time. The owner and his hired men went in search of the steer and finally found him on the summit of a mountain, lying at the entrance of a cave. The animal refused to leave the spot. At length the owner, exasperated by its stubbornness, took up his bow and sent an arrow toward it. However, the arrow whirled about in the air and, coming directly toward the archer, wounded him.

All were frightened at this strange incident, and no one ventured to approach the place. They went directly to the Bishop of Siponto and related the incident to him. The holy prelate, after serious reflection, decided that there must be some mystery connected with it. He therefore prayed fervently that God's Holy Will might be revealed. Thereupon, St. Michael appeared to him in great splendor and said: "I am Michael the Archangel, who ever stand before the Lord. I am keeping this place under my special protection. By this strange occurrence, I wish to remind men to celebrate the divine service in my honor and that of all the Angels."

After this revelation, the Bishop and all the inhabitants of the place went up the mountain in solemn procession and prayed to the Lord through the intercession of St. Michael. When they arrived at the cave, they found an entrance which led down a stairway. No one, however, ventured to enter, and they performed their devotions at the opening. After that, many pilgrimages were made to this spot.

Much later, around the year 663, the Neapolitans decided to make war upon the inhabitants of Siponto and Benevento. The latter, at the advice of their bishop, kept a three days' fast and called upon the assistance of the holy Archangel. During the night preceding the attack, the Archangel again appeared to the Bishop and told him that God had listened to their petitions and that in the fourth hour of the day they should courageously meet the enemy, and they would gain the victory.

As soon as the attack began, all Monte Gargano was violently shaken. The entire summit was enveloped in dark clouds, from which flashes of lightning, like fiery arrows, flew toward the enemy - who in consequence took to flight. In joy and gratitude and amidst devout prayer, the conquerors entered the sacred spot. They found the cavern to be perfectly formed for a church which could hold about five hundred persons.

This cave had evidently been a place of refuge in which the early Christians had secretly held their services during times of persecution. From a crevice in the rock, which formed the ceiling of this sanctuary, water dripped down upon the rocks. This water was very refreshing and most pleasant to the taste, and it possessed healing properties. Many sick persons were instantly cured after drinking this water; others found health through the intercession of St. Michael. Many other miracles proved this place to be under the special protection of Heaven. Alongside of this subterranean church the bishop erected another, in which the services were conducted by cannons regular (priests who belong to a religious order). This church still exist.

May, the month of Our Lady

May, the month dedicated to Our Lady
Fourth Sunday after Easter
J.M.J.

St. Anselm says, "that as it is impossible for one who is not devout to Mary, and consequently not protected by her, to be saved, so is it impossible for one who recommends himself to her, and consequently is beloved by her, to be lost." St. Antoninus repeats the same thing and almost in the same words: "As it is impossible for those from whom Mary turns her eyes of mercy to be saved, so also are those towards whom she turns these eyes, and for whom she prays, necessarily saved and glorified." Consequently the clients of Mary will necessarily be saved.

Let those tremble who make but little account of their devotion to this Mother, or from carelessness give it up. The saints say that the salvation of those who are not protected by Mary is impossible. Many others declare the same thing; such as Blessed Albert, who says, that "all those who are not thy servants, O Mary, will perish." And St. Bonaventure: "He who neglects the service of the blessed Virgin will die in his sins." Again, "He who does not invoke thee, O Lady, will never get to Heaven." And, on the 99th Psalm the saint even says, "that not only those from whom Mary turns her face will not be saved, but that there will be no hope of their salvation." Before him, St. Ignatius the martyr said, "that it was impossible for any sinner to be saved without the help and favor of the most Blessed Virgin; because those who are not saved by the justice of God are with infinite mercy saved by the intercession of Mary."

St. Alphonsus in The Glories of Mary, pgs. 221 & 222

In the times of the Old Testament, friends, God saved the people through great leaders and prophets. He raised up Moses to lead the people out of the land of Egypt and into the Promised Land. He raised up Jonah to save the Ninevites from their sins. He raised up Judith to save the
Israelites from Holofernes and his army. In times of peril, in times of sinfulness and idolatry, at all times God was with His people and protected and guided them through His prophets.

How much more is this true in these latter times, my dear friends, when God provides us with His very own Mother to rescue us from so many
dangers and to guide through the storm to salvation. What a sweet assurance this is to have as our protector and guide one who has such a motherly compassion for all mankind! How foolish those who superciliously reject this necessary aid that God has provided for our salvation! As in the Old Testament, those who refused to listen to the prophets, those who laughed at Noah and his Ark, those who failed to heed the admonitions of Moses, Isaias, Jonas, Daniel, Jeremiah, etc..., just as assuredly as those people perished in their day, so too will we perish in our day if we fail to listen to the admonitions of the Mother of God in her apparitions and if we fail to seek Her aid and be devoted to Her.

We must heed her requests and pleas made known so recently at La Salette, Lourdes, and Fatima. We must pray the Rosary daily and spread and foster devotion to this kind Mother, who tenderly but firmly rebukes the debauchery of the human race and so powerfully intercedes to obtain our salvation.

We hope that you all will increase your devotion to Mary, the Mother of God, during this Her month of May. As the people begged Moses to pray to God to turn away His wrath from them, so we must rush to Mary to confidently implore this tender Mother to save us from the chastisement we so richly deserve. "It is impossible for a client of Mary, who is faithful in honoring and recommending himself to her, to be lost", says St. Alphonsus.

You will not swerve from the right path;

If you pray to Her, you will not fall into despair;

If She leads you, you will never weary; and

If She befriends you, you will be safe.

The Rite Time

Yes, sad but true. Catholics everywhere have been anticipating the release of a document allowing a freer celebration of the Tridentine Mass.

But from what I've learned so far it really doesn't matter. Because as far as I know the Old rite was never suppressed.

In 1986 Pope John Paul appointed a commission of nine Cardinals to examine the legality of the Tridentine Latin Mass. The nine Cardinals were asked two questions:

1. Did Pope Paul VI authorize the bishops to forbid the celebration of the traditional Mass?
2. Does the priest have the right to celebrate the traditional Mass in public and in private without restriction, even against the will of the bishop?

The Commission answered in private, that:

1. Pope Paul VI did not forbid the celebration of the Tridentine Latin Mass
2. Priests are in no way obligated the celebrate the New Rite of Mass
3. Bishops cannot place any restrictions on the celebration of the Old Rite of Mass.

So there, having said it I rest my case.

Rite TurnCan the Latin Mass make a comeback?

When word began to spread last year that Pope Benedict XVI might release a document that would allow some changes in the ways Catholic worship on Sunday mornings, the reaction in some quarters approached giddy enthusiasm. "It's coming … it's coming!" wrote one blogger of the imminent release of the papal decree. (As it turned out, its release was not so imminent. Catholics who were waiting are still waiting, though reports now suggest the announcement could come in a few weeks.)
